Clean and articulate. Young, hip and irreverent. I am Black, Lebanese, Hungarian and queer as a three dollar bill. - I started this blog primarily to call out racism and to center the experiences of women and queer people color with a focus on the personal, the political and the absurd.
POC (Person of Color)- any non-white or mixed person who considers themself a POC, including, but not limited to people of Black/Diasporic African, Asian, Indigenous, Latina/o, Middle Eastern descent, etc.
Mixed- belonging to more than one (socially constructed) racial category, a.k.a. bi- or multiracial
Queer- An umbrella terms which includes gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender folks who identify with it and sometimes people who are questioning (their gender identity or sexual orientation,) as well as people who ID as intersex, pansexual and asexual. Ironically many of the people who ID as LGB or T (Lesbian, Gay, Bi or Trans) do not identify with or use the term queer because the L, G, B, or T fits them better. Queer seems most useful for those who don't fit neatly under any of the aforementioned letters, or don't want to be specific for any given reason. More on the connotations of the Q word here.
Trans(gender)- Someone who identifies as a gender other than the one they were assigned at birth. May identify as a man or woman. May also identify exclusively as trans or genderqueer.
(Self-)identify, or ID- how one sees themself. It's really crucial to me to respect the way people see themselves and refer to them that way because people often make mistaken assumptions about my identity (race, sexual orientation and gender.) Not everyone who "looks" white, brown, gay, straight, like a man or a like a woman (just to name a few) identifies as white, brown, gay, straight, as a man or a as a woman. Recognize!
Homo- term of endearment used between me and other homos. If you're not one, don't try this at home, kids. Actually, you can use it at home, just don't use it anywhere else.
QPOC (Queer Person of Color)- What all the cool kids are.
